July 17th, 2011 5 Things You Must Know About Orchid Growing
Even for people who are familiar with gardening, growing orchids can be a difficult task. These plants tend to have a reputation for being needy or tedious to grow. But anyone with real orchid growing knowledge can tell you, this isn’t quite the case.
Just by learning several easy fundamentals, you can successfully grow virtually ANY orchid with a terrific outcome. That’s why I’ve collected this list of “FAQs” to answer the major questions (and bust some myths)….
FAQ #1: Aren’t They Difficult to Grow?
Orchids aren’t really as difficult to raise as you might think. You just have to learn what particular requirements your type of orchid has and then do your best to meet them. Each plant needs varying amounts of sunlight and water, and none of them do well with soil whatsoever. So it’s easy to comprehend why growing them can seem intimidating. Just be sure to find an orchid whose needs you can match, and you should have no troubles!
FAQ #2: What’s the Best Orchid for Newbies?
It’s usually agreed that the best plant for beginners is the phalaenopsis orchid, or “moth orchid”. These orchids are tough up against beginner’s mistakes and don’t take long to bloom. But nevertheless, they produce incredible blossoms that you’ll love.
They’re also quite abundant and inexpensive, so you could even purchase a few in case you unintentionally kill one of them (which does sometimes occur, sad to say). All in all, they’re just an amazing plant to learn on when growing these plants!
FAQ #3: How Do I Pick a Good Orchid?
Selecting a good orchid is similar to choosing any other healthy plant. You want to make sure that the shoots and leaves look strong and healthy. Make sure that the plant is capable of standing up under its own weight and doesn’t look wilted.
If you can, look at the root system to make sure it’s healthy and thriving. Search for the existence of flower spikes to get an idea of how many blossoms you can anticipate your plant to produce. (It can help you make a checklist before you go plant shopping, so that you will not forget what to search for.)
FAQ #4: How Can I Keep My Orchid Healthy?
Keeping an orchid healthy is a complicated subject, but basically, it all comes down to maintaining the right environment for your orchid at all times.
If it needs a lot of aeration, don’t keep it imprisoned in a heavy mix. If it needs indirect sunlight, don’t put it right in the sun. If it must have high humidity, don’t put it somewhere dry.
Take steps to make sure that you learn what the specific needs of your orchid are (there are a few thousand distinct species of orchids out there!) Also take care to watch your plant to observe how it reacts to different orchid care methods you try on your plant growing adventures.
FAQ #5: Why Isn’t it Blooming?
This is probably the most frequently asked question of all. Orchid growers can be a little anxious about when their orchids are going to blossom. Unlike annuals or perennials, orchids have been known to take up to three years to blossom, and re-flowering after that can be random. This is why you need to take action to find out the age of your plant when you buy it.
Orchids labeled as “BS” are ready to flower within the next year. And those labeled “NBS” may take longer than that. Each plant has a different time in which it’s expected to bloom, so for a lot of people, the answer to this query is basically, “it’s just not ready to bloom yet.”
If your plant should be blooming, however, and it isn’t, then you have to make some modifications to the care you’re providing it. Ensure that all of its environmental and nutritional needs are being met. When growing orchids, remember flowering requires a lot of energy and optimal health.
