November 9th, 2011 The Advantages of Organic Vegetable Gardening
Take a look a closer look at the produce section next time you go to the grocery store . It is amazing! I adore walking amongst the colorful rows of texture and shapes. It is a visual experience that draws my touch and smell and ultimately my check book.
Regrettably, that lovely looking produce is laden with chemicals that cruise through your bloodstream and might possibly cause an untold number of potential diseases. This is only one reason to avoid store-bought produce and take up organic vegetable gardening.
5 Reasons to Grow Your Own Organic Veggies
1) It is probably one of the best ways to save cash…lots of it. If you organize your organic garden correctly to begin with, it results in a self sustaining and productive undertaking for years to come with very little help from you. How this comes about is simple – once the garden becomes established, nature takes over . You won’t need to throw expensive chemicals at it for it thrive and the resulting harvest is 100% free.
2) As already stated above – there won’t be any dangerous chemicals coming into your body. These chemicals are essentially poisonous and can have a negative effect on your health over time . Instead you’ll consume highly concentrated quantities of vitamins and minerals that are normally disappated because of the the long production process. You will feel more energetic – guaranteed.
3) The overall taste of vegetables from an organic garden is more intense than the store bought variety. Yes , the zucchini at Safeway looks healthy and uniform , but you have to admit – sometimes the taste can be a little dull . This is true for most produce. I used less salt after I started eating home grown . Apparently, the salt acted as a flavor enhancer.
4) Planting the vegetables , observing them grow and the final harvest are both satisfying and therapeutic. It calms the mind, pleases the spirit and replenishes the bond with nature. Many of us have lost interest in the natural world over the past few generations and organic gardening is a great way to bring it back into our daily life .
5) Organic vegetable gardening is a green activity that helps the earth by using natural ecological practices . Can you imagine what it would be like if everyone grew their own food organically? It would be really interesting to find out !
The best size for an organic vegetable garden is 15’ x 15’, but smaller is fine too – just keep the square shape . This is sufficient space to feed your entire family all year . If you live in an apartment or simply don’t have the space for garden in the ground , then think about organic container gardening – it is a great alternative and with a a couple of exceptions, you can grow just about anything in a container that you can in the ground .
